Exchangeable Random Processes and Data Abstraction

چکیده
Several Turing-complete probabilistic programming languages such as Church, Venture and Anglican support so-called exchangeable random processes (XRPs) as built-in abstract data types. Instances of these data types denote infinite sequences of random values. Every such object satisfies the so-called exchangeability property, which says that the probability distribution of the object does not change under permutations of the sequence. In fact, exchangeability is one of the core concepts in Bayesian statistics, from which these infinite sequences originate. (Extensions of the notion of exchangeability for sequences apply to other infinite random objects such as graphs, which we consider in Section 3.) We have been working on semantic foundations and reasoning principles for data types for exchangeable random processes, with special emphasis on the client programs of these data types. One slogan that summarises our efforts well is this: a data type for a random process is exchangeable if its inclusion in a probabilistic programming language does not break the following commutativity and discardability of the language, i.e.,

Regenerative tree growth processes
We introduce regenerative tree growth processes as consistent families of random trees with n labelled leaves, n ≥ 1, with a regenerative property at branch points. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions on the growth rules under which we can apply results by Haas and Miermont to establish self-similar random trees and residual mass processes as scaling limits. This framework includes...
متن کاملInformation theory of Exchangeable Estimators
Exchangeable random partition processes are the basis for Bayesian approaches to statistical inference in large alphabet settings. On the other hand, the notion of the pattern of a sequence provides a framework for data compression in large alphabet scenarios. Because data compression and parameter estimation are intimately related, we study the redundancy of Bayes estimators coming from Poisso...
متن کاملPredictive information and Bayesian surprise in exchangeable random processes
In this report we examine the connection between Itti and Baldi’s ‘Bayesian suprise’ [1] and instantaneous predictive information [2], and show that the two are identical in certain classes of exchangeable random sequences. We also examine how these relationships can be used to compute the instantaneous predictive information in a Markov chain where the transition matrix is unknown. Samples fro...
متن کاملApproximation Theorems for Random Permanents and Associated Stochastic Processes
The limit theorems for certain stochastic processes generated by permanents of random matrices of independent columns with exchangeable components are established. The results are based on the martingale decomposition of a random permanent function similar to the one known for U -statistics and on relating the components of this decomposition to some multiple stochastic integrals.
